Elizabeth was originally founded in 1664 and was named after Elizabeth Carteret, wife of Sir George Carteret, one of the original Proprietors of New Jersey. Elizabeth grew rapidly during the Industrial Revolution and by the early 20th century had become a major industrial center, home to Singer Manufacturing, Maxwell House, Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, and more. The city suffered an economic downturn in the latter half of the 20th century as manufacturing declined, but has rebounded as a diversified city.
