Paterson is a city in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2020 United States Census, its population was 149,684, making it New Jersey's third-most-populous city. History

Paterson was founded in 1791 by Alexander Hamilton who helped industrialize the city by constructing a major raceway system that harnessed the power of the Great Falls of the Passaic River. Over the next century, Paterson grew in size and industry, attaining great prosperity through textile production and locomotive manufacturing.
