New Jersey is located in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern regions of the United States. It is bordered by the states of New York, Pennsylvania, and Delaware and the Atlantic Ocean. History

Humans began inhabiting the area now known as New Jersey over 10,000 years ago. Native American tribes like the Lenape and Munsee lived in the region and traded with early Dutch and Swedish settlers in the early 1600s. The British gained control of the area in 1664 and it was split into East Jersey and West Jersey until being reunited as a royal colony in 1702. Geography and Climate

New Jersey spans 8,729 square miles and has four distinct geographical regions: the Appalachian Valley and Ridge Region in the northwest, the Highlands Region which runs diagonally through the state, the Piedmont Region in the central part of the state, and the Atlantic Coastal Plain which makes up the southern part of the state. The highest elevation is High Point at 1,803 feet above sea level located in Sussex County. The state has a humid continental climate with warm, humid summers and cold winters. The weather is moderated somewhat near the coast. Average highs range from 38°F in January to 86°F in July.
