History

Johnson City was first settled in the late 1700s. It was originally named “Blue Plum” after the blueberry trees that grew in the area. In the 1850s, the East Tennessee and Virginia Railroad was built through what is now Johnson City. The town was renamed “Johnson Depot” after Henry Johnson, who provided the land for the railroad.
