Nicknamed "The Volunteer State," Tennessee is located in the southeastern United States. It is the 36th largest state by area and the 16th most populous state with a population of over 6.8 million residents. History

Tennessee was admitted to the Union as the 16th state on June 1, 1796. It was founded as part of the Southwest Territory as early as 1769 when explorers made their way through the Appalachian Mountains. Throughout the 18th century, European settlers began establishing farms and plantations, particularly along the Watauga River valley. Tennessee played a significant role in the American Civil War as a member state of the Confederate States of America.
