Germantown has a rich history dating back to the 1830s when European settlers first came to the area. He sold 1,280 acres of land to William Raine who opened the land to be settled. In 1836, a small village known as Pea Ridge was established which was later renamed Germantown.

During the Civil War, Germantown changed hands several times between Union and Confederate forces. On June 6, 1862, Germantown was the site of a brief battle when Confederate cavalry attacked Union forces camped there. The Confederates were eventually driven off.
