History

Clarksville was founded in 1785 by pioneer John Montgomery as the county seat of Montgomery County. It was named for General George Rogers Clark, a Revolutionary War hero who captured the Northwest Territory from the British in the 1770s. The city quickly prospered due to its location on the Cumberland River, which enabled trade and transportation. Tobacco and hemp were early major crops.

During the Civil War, the city was captured by Confederate forces in 1862 and occupied until Federal troops took control the following year. Due to its strategic location, Clarksville saw more than its share of combat over the course of the war. It was a significant hub for transportation and commerce throughout this period.
