Bartlett is a city located in Shelby County, Tennessee, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 61,999, making it the ninth largest city in Tennessee. Bartlett is a suburb of Memphis and is part of the Memphis metropolitan area.

Population

According to the 2020 census, Bartlett had a population of 61,999 people. The racial makeup of the city was 73.4% White, 17.5% African American, 5.2% Hispanic or Latino, 3.5% Asian, and 0.4% Native American. Bartlett saw rapid population growth between 1970 and 2000, more than tripling in size as Memphis residents migrated East to newer housing. Population growth has slowed since 2000 but has remained steady.

History

Bartlett was first settled in the 1830s and incorporated in 1867. The city got its name from Major Gabriel Bartlett, who was granted land in the area for his service in the American Revolutionary War. For most of its early history, Bartlett was a small farming community. However, with the suburban expansion of Memphis after World War 2, Bartlett began to grow rapidly. Today, Bartlett maintains much of its historic small-town charm while also serving as a popular suburb of Memphis.
