Sumter, South Carolina is a city located in Sumter County in the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population of Sumter was 39,643 residents, making it the 8th largest city in South Carolina by population.

History

Sumter was founded in 1845 and named after General Thomas Sumter, a Revolutionary War hero. During the Civil War, Sumter was an important supply and railroad center for the Confederacy. The city saw battles during the war including the Battle of Sumterville in April 1865.

After the war, Sumter's economy relied heavily on agriculture, especially cotton. Lumber and farming remained important industries throughout the 20th century. Shaw Air Force Base opened east of the city in 1941, providing an economic boost. Today, Shaw remains one of the largest employers in Sumter along with several manufacturing plants.
