South Carolina is a state located in the southeastern United States. It is bordered by North Carolina, Georgia, and the Atlantic Ocean. South Carolina was one of the 13 original colonies that declared independence from Great Britain and helped form the United States.

South Carolina has a rich history dating back to when the land was inhabited by Native American tribes like the Cherokee, Catawba, and Yamasee. The first European explorers arrived in 1540, but it was not until 1670 that the English created the first permanent European settlement called Charles Towne Landing in present-day Charleston.

South Carolina was one of the 13 original colonies that rebelled against British rule during the American Revolution. On December 20, 1860, South Carolina became the first state to secede from the Union leading up to the American Civil War. After the war, the state went through a long period of economic hardship and racial segregation under the Jim Crow laws until the Civil Rights Movement began changing things in the 1950s and 60s.
