History

The Spartanburg area was inhabited for thousands of years by various indigenous peoples. By the time European settlers arrived in the 1700s, the Cherokee people occupied the land. In 1780 during the Revolutionary War, the Battle of Musgrove Mill took place near present-day Spartanburg. The new town was formed in 1785 and named Spartanburg after a local militia called the Spartan Regiment. It was incorporated in 1831 and later became a railroad hub which helped the city prosper. During the Civil War, Spartanburg was never invaded though skirmishes took place nearby. After the war, textile mills drove growth and the population boomed. Spartanburg continued expanding through the 1900s and is today the economic and cultural hub of the Upstate region.
