Once a sleepy small town dependent on the textile industry, Greenville has transformed into one of the fastest growing cities in the Southeast and a thriving center for business, tourism, arts and culture. The historic downtown area has been extensively revitalized in recent decades with award-winning restaurants, boutique shopping, public art installations, green spaces, and more. Greenville offers an impressive array of attractions for visitors and a great quality of life for residents.

History of Greenville

The area that is now Greenville was originally Cherokee hunting grounds until the Treaty of Dewitt's Corner in 1777 which opened the land up to European settlers. The name "Greenville" comes from Revolutionary War general Nathanael Greene. Greenville County was created in 1786.

In the early 1800s Greenville grew into a cotton-producing and trading center. Mills were later built to process the cotton into textiles. By 1915 Greenville was the center of the textile industry in South Carolina producing more cotton goods than any other U.S. city. However, the importance of textiles declined through the 20th century.

In the 1960s, Greenville business leaders made a commitment to revitalizing the downtown area into a vibrant and attractive destination. Their efforts have made Greenville a benchmark for successful downtown redevelopment and economic growth in the United States. Greenville continues to attract major companies and talent contributing to its growth.
