Columbia is the capital and second largest city in the state of South Carolina, with a population of 134,309 as of 2019 according to the Wikipedia page. It is the primary city of the Midlands region of South Carolina and serves as one of the three major population centers of the state, along with Charleston and Greenville.

History

Columbia was founded in 1786 as the site was selected to become the new state capital. It was ideally located in the center of the state for the convenience of the population. The city was named Columbia, a poetic name for the United States in use at that time.

During the Civil War, Columbia was a location of several battles and was burned by Union troops under the command of General William T. Sherman in 1865. Much of the central city was destroyed as a result.

After the war, Columbia prospered as an agricultural center. Cotton was the primary cash crop. The state legislature established the University of South Carolina in 1801 in Columbia. The city grew throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, though it was surpassed in population by Charleston in 1920.

Government

Columbia has a council-manager form of government. The city council consists of six members, with four elected in single member districts and two elected citywide. The city manager is appointed by the council and serves as the chief administrative officer. The current mayor of Columbia is Daniel Rickenmann.
