Charleston is the oldest and largest city in the U.S. state of South Carolina. With a population of over 137,000 as of 2019, Charleston is the second largest city in South Carolina after Columbia. History

Charleston was founded in 1670 as Charles Town, honoring King Charles II of England. It moved to its current peninsular location in 1680 from a location on the west bank of the Ashley River. Charleston was a major port city for the southern colonies during the colonial era and was the location of the official start of the American Revolution in the South with the Battle of Sullivan's Island in 1776. It was a center of commerce and trade, both before and after the Revolutionary War, and also relied heavily on the enslaved labor of Africans who were brought to Charleston and South Carolina in large numbers. The city was the epicenter of the plantation economy and prominence of the planter elite who had families with major plantations in the South Carolina Lowcountry.

Charleston saw significant activity during the American Civil War. The first shots of the Civil War were fired at Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor on April 12, 1861. After a 34-hour bombardment by Confederate forces, the Union troops at Fort Sumter surrendered. The city remained in Confederate control until it was evacuated in February 1865 as Union General William Sherman marched through South Carolina.
