History

The land on which Enid sits today was occupied by the Wichita and Osage tribes in the early 19th century. In the 1880s, the government forced the tribes out of the area and opened it up for white settlement. The Cherokee Outlet Land Run on September 16, 1893 officially opened the Unassigned Lands for settlement, and thousands rushed in to stake their land claims. Enid was born that day when two railroad surveyors named Enid after the Lady of the Lake from Tennyson’s Idylls of the King. Enid quickly blossomed into a bustling frontier town.
