Monroe is a city located in Union County, North Carolina, United States. According to the 2020 census, the population of Monroe was 36,322, making it the 8th largest city in North Carolina. Monroe was incorporated in 1843 and named after President James Monroe.

History

The early settlers of the Monroe area were mainly Scotch-Irish and German. Monroe was originally a trading village with a few stores and houses. In 1843, the town was incorporated and named for President James Monroe. Cotton farming fueled early growth in the area. Monroe grew slowly until the mid-20th century when growth accelerated. Today, Monroe is the largest city and county seat of Union County.[1]

Geography

Monroe has a total area of 14.6 square miles. It is located approximately 25 miles southeast of Charlotte. Monroe sits at an elevation of 653 feet above sea level.

Demographics

As of the 2020 census, there were 36,322 people and 13,720 households residing in Monroe. The racial makeup of the city was 57.3% White, 27.5% African American, 0.5% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 10.5% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino people of any race made up 17.4% of the population.

The Downtown Monroe Historic District encompasses Monroe's central business district and adjacent residential areas. Walking tours are available to see examples of Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, and Bungalow architecture.

Union County Courthouse

Built in 1909, the historic Union County Courthouse sits in the heart of downtown Monroe. The neoclassical building features a copper dome and houses county administrative offices.

Riverfront Park

Located along the banks of the Rocky River, this 25-acre park features walking trails, a playground, athletic fields, and a veterans memorial. Community events and festivals are held here throughout the year.

Wingate University, a private liberal arts institution, is located just outside Monroe in the town of Wingate. It enrolls over 3,500 students.[5]

Monroe has a council-manager form of government. The city council consists of the mayor and six council members who are each elected to four year terms. The current mayor of Monroe is Marion Holloway.

Monroe is home to the Monroe Cobras, a summer collegiate baseball team that plays in the Southern Collegiate Baseball League. Their home field is Monroe Athletic Park.
