History

The area that became Salisbury was settled in 1753 when John Steele, a colonist from Pennsylvania, bought 300 acres where the city center is now located. In 1755, Salisbury was chosen as the seat of Rowan County. The town was an important trading center and transportation hub in its early days.

During the Civil War, a Confederate prison operated in Salisbury from 1861 to 1865. Nearly 11,000 Union soldiers were confined here over the course of the war, with almost 1,800 dying from disease and poor conditions.

In the 20th century, Salisbury cemented its reputation as an industrial and manufacturing center, with textiles, furniture and financial services driving the local economy. It remains a regional hub today.
