Woodbridge is a township in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. History of Woodbridge

Woodbridge Township was originally incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 17, 1869, replacing Woodbridge political district, which was formed on October 31, 1693. Woodbridge was the first township in New Jersey.

The township is named after Reverend John W. Woodbridge (1613–1696) of Newbury, Massachusetts, who settled in the future township in present-day Woodbridge in the 17th century. Reverend Woodbridge, along with Captain John Pike, were the chief founders of the present day township.

The township was the site of the first gristmill in present-day New Jersey.

Population and Demographics

As of the 2020 United States Census, there were 102,504 people, 36,244 households, and 26,855 families residing in the township. The population density was 3,203.0 per square mile. There were 37,436 housing units at an average density of 1,175.0 per square mile.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 24.65% of the population. The ten most common ancestries were Italian (8.7%), Irish (5.7%), Polish (5.6%), Puerto Rican (4.9%), German (4.0%), Indian (3.5%), English (2.1%), Portuguese (2.0%), Russian (1.9%), and American (1.5%).

There were 36,244 households, of which 33.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 54.1% were married couples living together, 14.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.6% were non-families. 21.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.

The average household size was 2.80 and the average family size was 3.27. The median age was 40.7 years.
