Winslow is a city located in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2020 Census, the city had a population of 39,364, making it the 16th largest municipality in New Jersey. Winslow was originally formed as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 8, 1845, from portions of Waterford Township. Portions of the township were taken to form Chesilhurst Borough (January 26, 1887) and Clementon Township (February 24, 1903). The township was reincorporated as the City of Winslow on August 9, 1952. The city is named for Richard Winslow, an American Revolutionary War patriot.

Geography and Climate

Winslow is located at 39°53′30′′N 74°59′20′′W. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city had a total area of 9.728 square miles (25.203 km2), including 9.488 square miles (24.576 km2) of land and 0.240 square miles (0.622 km2) of water (2.47%).

Winslow has a humid subtropical climate typical of New Jersey. Summers are hot and humid, with average high temperatures in the mid 80s Fahrenheit. Winters are cold, with average highs in the low 40s. The city gets an average of 47 inches of rainfall per year. Snowfall averages 22 inches per year.

Demographics

As of the 2020 United States Census, there were 39,364 people, 14,254 households, and 9,788 families residing in the city. The population density was 4,138.9 inhabitants per square mile. There were 14,933 housing units at an average density of 1,552.4 per square mile.

Winslow's racial makeup was 66.03% White, 15.92% Black or African American, 0.46% Native American, 10.33% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 4.19% from other races, and 3.04% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino people of any race made up 9.36% of the population.

There were 14,254 households, of which 31.7% had children under the age of 18; 52.6% were married couples living together; 12.6% had a female householder with no husband present and 30.4% were non-families. 24.8% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.25.

In Winslow, the population was spread out, with 23.3% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 27.0% from 45 to 64, and 12.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37.3 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.5 males. For every 100 females ages 18 and older there were 91.4 males.

History

Winslow traces its history back to the 1600s when the Lenni Lenape Native Americans inhabited the area. The first European settlers arrived in the 1690s. In 1845, Winslow Township was established. For many years, Winslow was a largely rural and agricultural community.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Winslow began to industrialize. Manufacturing plants and workers' housing were constructed. The population grew steadily through the 20th century. In 1952, Winslow Township was incorporated as the City of Winslow. Major employers today include healthcare, retail, and service industries.
