With a population of around 56,000 residents, Union, New Jersey is a township in Union County. It is part of the New York metropolitan area and located about 15 miles southwest of New York City. Once a major hub for the hat making industry, Union is now known for its diversity and thriving small businesses.

History

The Lenape Native Americans were the first known inhabitants of the area now known as Union. European settlers began arriving in the 17th century, establishing farms and homesteads. In 1667, Connecticut Puritans led by Robert Treat purchased land from the Lenape and named it Newark Plantations. The area that would become Union was originally part of Newark Township.

In 1808, Union was incorporated as a township named Union Township. The name Union was chosen to reflect the "union" of Springfield and Connecticut Farms, which were earlier settlements in the area. In 1857, Clinton Township was created from portions of the township.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, Union became a significant center of hatting. The township's access to rabbit fur and proximity to New York City helped the hat making industry thrive. At its peak in the 1920s, Union had 32 hat factories producing millions of hats each year.

While the hat making industry eventually declined, Union evolved into a diverse suburban community. In the late 20th century, it saw an influx of new immigrants from Europe, Latin America, and Asia. Today, over 56,000 residents from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds call Union home.
