History

The area was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans. In 1712, William Leeds acquired a large tract of land in the region which included Toms River. The river was named after Captain William Tom who had a blockhouse fort along the river.

Toms River became the county seat of the newly created Ocean County in 1850. The arrival of the railroad spurred growth and industry in the late 19th century. In the 20th century, Toms River became a popular seaside resort destination. The population boomed after World War II with many new housing developments.
