Teaneck is a township in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2020 United States Census, the township's population was 41,677, reflecting an increase of 447 (+1.1%) from the 41,230 counted in the 2010 Census, which had in turn increased by 2,064 (+5.3%) from the 39,166 counted in the 2000 Census. As of 2010 it was the second-most populous among the 70 municipalities in Bergen County, behind only Hackensack, which had a population of 43,010.

Teaneck was created on February 19, 1895 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature from portions of Englewood Township and Ridgefield Township, both of which are now defunct (despite existing municipalities with similar names), and was formed as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 4, 1895. Independence followed the opening of the west end of the George Washington Bridge in 1931, which connected the community directly to New York City. The opening of the bridge led to increased real estate values, replacing the rural character of the community with suburban sprawl.

Teaneck lies to the northwest of lower Manhattan in New York City and it is in the southernmost part of Bergen County, which functions as a suburban extension of New York City. Commuting from Teaneck to New York City takes approximately 30-40 minutes.

Teaneck's population is diverse, with large Jewish, Black, and Hispanic communities. In 1999, Teaneck elected its first African-American mayor.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 17.04% of the population.

History

Teaneck was originally inhabited by the Hackensack Indians, a tribe of the Lenape, who named the area "Tien Neck" meaning "neck of land". Teaneck was founded in 1895 and incorporated as a township on March 4, 1895 by a vote of 35-15. The founding of the township was the result of a petition by William W. Bennett, who gathered signatures from landowners to meet the minimum property requirement of $50,000. Early land purchases were made by William Walter Phelps, who envisioned a village community called "New Milford" as a commuter town servicing New York City. A series of infrastructure improvements, including new train station, sewer system, gas, electric, and telephone service assisted the growth of the new community, which expanded rapidly between World War I and World War II. Development was spurred by the opening of the George Washington Bridge in 1931, which allowed much easier access from Teaneck to New York City.

Teaneck was the site of the Mary Help of Christians Academy, a Catholic preparatory school founded in 1933 and operated by the Salesians of Don Bosco until the school closed in 1988 due to low enrollment. The extensive facilities were put up for sale and burdened with millions of dollars of debt. After several unsuccessful attempts to generate a viable usage for the site, in 2001 Votee Park was established on the grounds providing Teaneck residents with recreation sports facilities including a soccer field, baseball fields, tennis courts and playground equipment.
