Piscataway is a township located in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2020 Census, the township had a total population of 59,471, making it the state's fifth-largest municipality and the largest in Middlesex County. Piscataway Township also covers an area of 19.31 square miles.

History

Piscataway Township was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans. The area was first settled in 1666 by Quakers and Baptists who were relocated by Richard Nicolls. He named it after the town of Piscataqua, which is believed to derive its name from an Algonquian word meaning "stream between two hills". Piscataway was officially incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on December 18, 1666, making it one of the oldest townships in Middlesex County.

According to the 2020 Census, Piscataway Township had a population of 59,471. This makes it the 5th most populous municipality in New Jersey. The population density was 3,072.7 inhabitants per square mile. The racial makeup of the township was 44.42% White, 32.08% African American, 0.15% Native American, 17.91% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 2.76% from other races, and 2.65% from two or more races.
