History

The first European settlements in the Passaic area were Dutch trading posts established in the late 17th century, including one known as Acquackanonk Landing. The city itself was incorporated as the Township of Passaic in 1837. It was centered around the Passaic River, which provided water power to run the mills and factories in the city's early days.

Passaic was officially incorporated as a city on April 2, 1873. The city developed rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries with the rise of the textile and hatmaking industries. Many factories and mills were constructed along the Passaic River, leading to an influx of European immigrants seeking work.
