Old Bridge is a township in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2020 United States Census, the township had a total population of 65,375, making it the state's 25th most populous municipality. Old Bridge Township borders the municipalities of Sayreville and East Brunswick.

Old Bridge is located in the Raritan Valley region and is about 28 miles southwest of New York City. It got the name 'Old Bridge' from the old bridges that cross the South River in the township.

History of Old Bridge

The earliest inhabitants of the area were the Lenape Native Americans. The Lenape lived peacefully along the river they called the Naraticong, or South River. European settlers arrived in the late 17th century and established farms and industry along the banks of the South River. The village of Madison Park was established in 1663. During the American Revolutionary War, British loyalists built fortifications along the South River to defend against rebel attacks from General George Washington's Continental Army.

Old Bridge Township is governed within the Faulkner Act, formally known as the Optional Municipal Charter Law, under the Mayor-Council system of municipal government. The township is one of 71 municipalities statewide that use this form of government.

The five-member Township Council is elected to serve three-year terms on a staggered basis, with either two or three seats coming up for election each year. At an annual reorganization meeting, the council selects one of its members to serve as president.
