North Brunswick is a township in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2020 United States Census, the township had a total population of 44,371, making it the state's 30th largest municipality. North Brunswick was incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 21, 1798, as one of New Jersey's initial group of 104 townships. Portions of the township were taken to form East Brunswick Township (February 28, 1860) and Milltown (January 29, 1889).

North Brunswick is home to major pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies such as Johnson & Johnson and Novartis. The township's strategic location offers easy access to major highways and airports and is proximate to major metropolitan areas such as New York City and Philadelphia.

History

The history of North Brunswick begins with the Lenape Native Americans, who originally inhabited the area. In the 17th century, Dutch settlers established farms and mills along the Lawrence Brook. In 1745, the first road through the township was constructed, called the King's Highway. During the Revolutionary War, Gen. George Washington's troops marched through the township on several occasions. The township continued to grow in the 19th century with the construction of the Delaware & Raritan Canal.

According to the 2020 United States Census, North Brunswick Township had a population of 44,371. The racial makeup of the township was 51.67% White, 21.93% African American, 0.14% Native American, 20.92% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 2.63% from other races, and 2.69% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino people of any race were 8.87% of the population.

North Brunswick has excellent transportation infrastructure. NJ Transit provides bus service to New York City. The township is easily accessible from the New Jersey Turnpike, Route 1, Route 130, and Route 27. It is located just 10 minutes from Newark Liberty International Airport.

Public education in North Brunswick Township is overseen by the North Brunswick Township Public Schools district. The district consists of ten schools - six elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools. North Brunswick is also home to St. Peter the Apostle School, a private K-8 Catholic school.
