History

The Lenni Lenape Native Americans were the original inhabitants of what is now Mount Laurel. The town was formally established in 1682 and originally included portions of several neighboring communities. Early settlers were predominantly Quakers. Mount Laurel was incorporated as a township in 1812. For most of its history, Mount Laurel was a quiet, agricultural community known for tree and flower nurseries.

The township underwent major changes starting in the 1970s as suburban residential and commercial development quickly transformed Mount Laurel from a rural area to a bedroom community. Mount Laurel was at the center of the landmark Mount Laurel fair housing legal cases, which prohibited exclusionary zoning and required municipalities to provide fair access to housing for poor and minority residents.
