Monroe is a township located in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2020 United States Census, the township's population was 41,056, making it the state's 103rd-most populous municipality.[8][9][10] Monroe Township was incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 3, 1847, from portions of South Amboy Township, based on the results of a referendum held that same day. Portions of the township were taken to form East Brunswick Township (February 28, 1860), Helmetta (March 20, 1888), Milltown (January 29, 1889) and Jamesburg (April 15, 1919).

The racial makeup was 72.98% White, 8.92% African American, 0.17% Native American, 13.25% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 2.15% from other races, and 2.49% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino people of any race made up 8.26% of the population.

History

Monroe was originally incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 3, 1847, from portions of South Amboy Township, based on the results of a referendum held that same day. Monroe was reincorporated as a township on February 28, 1899.

Portions of the township were taken to form East Brunswick Township (February 28, 1860), Helmetta (March 20, 1888), Milltown (January 29, 1889) and Jamesburg (April 15, 1919).

The township's name comes from the Monroe family, who were local landowners when the township was formed.
