Linden, New Jersey is a city in Union County with a population of around 42,000 residents as of the 2020 US Census. Located just 25 minutes from New York City, Linden has developed into a diverse suburban community with a thriving industrial sector.

History

Linden was originally incorporated as a township in 1861. The area was sparsely populated with fertile farmland along the Arthur Kill and Rahway River. In the late 19th century, oil was discovered which helped establish Linden as an industrial city. Many refineries and processing plants were constructed.

As the population grew in the early 20th century, Linden separated from Union Township and became an independent municipality in 1925. The name "Linden" was chosen as a reference to the linden trees that grew in the area.

During World War II, Linden's industries were converted to help manufacture supplies and equipment for the war effort. The city's strategic location along railroad lines and major ports made it an important manufacturing hub during wartime.

After the war, Linden continued to expand as a manufacturing and chemical processing center. Large companies like DuPont, Exxon, Merck, and Bristol-Myers Squibb built facilities in the city. Linden remains an important industrial and economic center in New Jersey today.
