Lakewood is a township in Ocean County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2020 United States Census, the township had a total population of 104,157, making it the largest municipality in Ocean County and the fifth most populous municipality in the state. Lakewood is a major hub of Orthodox Judaism and is home to one of the largest yeshivas in the world.

History

Lakewood was incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 23, 1892, from portions of Brick Township. Portions of Howell Township were annexed to Lakewood Township in 1929.

Lakewood's rise as a resort began at the end of the 19th century, following completion of the New Jersey Southern Railroad in 1865. A Victorian hotel called the Laurel House was built near the town's eastern intersection with the railroad, where Laurel Avenue and First Street now meet. The Pine Park development, designed as a retreat for wealthy urbanites, was established near the hotel in 1879. The area around Lakewood continued to grow as a tourist destination through the early 20th century.

After World War II, Lakewood transformed rapidly from a resort town into a suburban community. Attracted by relatively low taxes, affordable housing, and an established Orthodox Jewish community, many Jewish families with young children relocated to Lakewood from cities across the Northeast. The town's population nearly doubled between 1950 and 1970.
