History of Kearny, NJ

Kearny was originally incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on April 8, 1867, from portions of Harrison Township. Portions of the township were taken on July 3, 1895, to form East Newark. Kearny was incorporated as a town on January 19, 1899, based on the results of a referendum held two days earlier.

The town is named after Civil War general Philip Kearny, who is buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. A statue of General Kearny is located in Kearny's Arlington Park, which was also named after the town in Arlington, Virginia.

Kearny's early development was spurred by the opening of the Newark and New York Railroad, now known as the PATH, in 1864. This line provided rail access to and from Newark and Manhattan, which helped attract industry and residents to Kearny. The town quickly grew around the railroad and the emerging industrial base.
