Irvington is a township in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2020 United States Census, the township had a total population of 60,695. Irvington is located approximately 10 miles west of New York City.

History

Irvington was originally known as Camptown when it was formed as a township on March 27, 1852 from portions of Clinton Township and Newark Township. The area was named after Washington Irving, the American author known for works such as "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle". Irvington was incorporated as an independent village on March 24, 1874, based on the results of a referendum held that day.

Geography and Demographics

Irvington is located at 40°43′50′′N 74°15′0′′W. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township had a total area of 2.879 square miles, including 2.847 square miles of land and 0.032 square miles of water. Irvington shares borders with Maplewood to the west, Newark to the east, and Hillside Township and South Orange to the south.

As of the 2020 Census, there were 60,695 people living in 24,201 households. The racial makeup of Irvington was 4.20% White, 88.08% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.40% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 4.12% from other races, and 2.98% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 13.34% of the population.

The population density was 21,357.0 per square mile. There were 25,695 housing units at an average density of 9,032.5 per square mile. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.19.

In the township, the population was spread out with 24.8% under the age of 18, 10.5% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 25.6% from 45 to 64, and 12.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36.4 years. For every 100 females there were 88.1 males. For every 100 females ages 18 and older there were 82.9 males.
