Howell is a township in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township's population was 51,075, reflecting an increase of 4,455 (+9.6%) from the 46,620 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 6,258 (+15.5%) from the 40,362 counted in the 1990 Census. The 2010 population was the highest recorded in any decennial census.

Howell Township was incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 23, 1801, from portions of Shrewsbury Township. Portions of the township were taken to form Brick Township in the newly created Ocean County (February 15, 1850), Wall Township (March 7, 1851) and Farmingdale (April 8, 1903).

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township had a total area of 61.171 square miles (158.508 km2), including 58.417 square miles (151.361 km2) of land and 2.754 square miles (7.128 km2) of water (4.50%).

Unincorporated communities, localities and place names located partially or completely within the township include Allaire, Archers Corner, Aults Corner, Bergen Mills, Blue Meetinghouse, Bodmans Corner, Candlewood, Cassville, College View, Georgia, Georgia Corners, Glendola, Havens Corner, Herbertsville, Howells, Howell Park, Hulseys Corner, Ike's Corner, Kenvil, Lake Park, Lakewood Crossing, Layton, Liberty Corner, Pine Grove, Southard, Stump Point Corner, Tiltons Corner, Vienna, West Farms and Woodville.

The township borders the Monmouth County municipalities of Farmingdale, Freehold Township, Jackson Township, Lakewood Township, Manalapan Township, Marlboro Township, Millstone Township and Wall Township.

Howell Township is approximately 53 miles (85 km) east of Philadelphia and 66 miles (106 km) south of New York City.

Demographics

The Census Bureau's 2006-2010 American Community Survey showed that (in 2010 inflation-adjusted dollars) median household income was $89,009 (with a margin of error of +/- $3,537) and the median family income was $100,673 (+/- $2,987). Males had a median income of $69,207 (+/- $4,440) versus $50,778 (+/- $2,993) for females. The per capita income for the township was $37,853 (+/- $1,260). About 3.4% of families and 4.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.9% of those under age 18 and 6.8% of those age 65 or over.

History

Howell was named for Richard Howell, fourth Governor of New Jersey.

The first Monmouth County agricultural fair was held in Howell in 1815, and Howell Township is home to the Freehold Raceway, which conducts live Standardbred harness racing year round.

Economy

Originally a largely rural area, Howell Township began developing as a suburban bedroom community during the late 20th century with the opening of Route 9 and expansions to arterial roads including Route 33 and Interstate 195 which spurred housing developments. While still maintaining a robust farming community, by the 1990s Howell Township became home to a number of factories and warehouses along its Route 9 and Route 33 corridors.

Allaire State Park

Allaire State Park is a 3,678-acre state park located in Monmouth County northwest of Farmingdale. The park is operated and maintained by the New Jersey Division of Parks and Forestry. Its history dates back to the early 19th century when it was the site of the prominent Hal Allaire Iron Works. Today, Allaire State Park provides recreational opportunities, including hiking and picnicking.

Howell Park Golf Course

Howell Park Golf Course is an 18-hole public golf course located in Howell Township. The signature 15th hole is named one of the most difficult Par 4 holes in New Jersey. The course was opened in 1969.

As of the 2017–18 school year, the district's four schools had an enrollment of 4,052 students and 365.0 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 11.1:1.
