History

Hoboken was first settled as part of the Pavonia, New Netherland colony in the 17th century. It was formally incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on April 6, 1849, from portions of North Bergen Township. Geography

Hoboken is located at 40.743° N, 74.032° W. It covers 1.275 square miles of land and 0.7 square miles of water, with a total area of 1.975 square miles. Hoboken is situated on the Hudson Waterfront, flanked on the east by the Hudson River and on the south and west by Jersey City. As of the 2020 United States Census, there were 53,673 people, 25,580 households, and 9,868 families residing in the city. The population density was 42,242.4 per square mile. There were 28,546 housing units at an average density of 22,346.8 per square mile.

Hoboken has historically been home to industry, including electronics, food manufacture, printing and publishing, shipbuilding and repair, precision equipment manufacturing, and machine shops supporting those industries.
