Hackensack is a city in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2020 United States Census, the city's population was 45,708, reflecting an increase of 2,309 (+5.3%) from the 43,010 counted in the 2010 Census, which had in turn increased by 580 (+1.4%) from the 42,430 counted in 2000. As of the 2010 Census, the city was the county seat of Bergen County.

Hackensack is located approximately 12 miles northwest of Midtown Manhattan and about 7 miles from the George Washington Bridge connecting New Jersey and New York. It is situated on the Hackensack River, a major tributary of Newark Bay, approximately 9 miles from the Atlantic Ocean and 7 miles from the Hudson River. The city borders the Bergen County municipalities of Bogota, Hasbrouck Heights, Maywood, Oradell, River Edge, Rochelle Park, South Hackensack, and Teaneck.

History

Hackensack was officially incorporated as a city on March 5, 1855, removing it from New Barbadoes Township. The city owes its beginnings to the New Netherland colony that was established in 1633. In 1693, Hackensack was designated as the county seat of Bergen County. The construction of the county courthouse was authorized in 1715.

During the American Revolutionary War, George Washington headquartered in the Zabriskie House in June 1780 while preparing for the Battle of Springfield. Hackensack established a local board of education in 1894, as required by the new law, which took over operation of schools located in the township and established Hackensack High School.

Population

As of the 2020 Census, Hackensack had a population of 45,708. The racial makeup of the city was 69.46% White, 13.49% Black or African American, 0.51% Native American, 7.65% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 5.44% from other races, and 3.41% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino residents of any race made up 24.92% of the population.

Hackensack RiverWalk

The Hackensack RiverWalk is a greenway that follows the Hackensack River through scenic marshes and wildlife areas. The 2.6 mile path features educational signage and places for fishing, birdwatching, and just enjoying nature. It's a beautiful natural oasis in the heart of Hackensack.

Transportation

Hackensack is easily accessible by car, train, bus, and air thanks to its central location and excellent transportation infrastructure. Major highways serving Hackensack include Interstate 80, the Garden State Parkway, Route 4, and Route 17. Public transportation is provided by NJ Transit buses and rail service via the Montclair-Boonton Line and Pascack Valley Line.

Education

Hackensack public schools are part of the Hackensack Public Schools district. The district operates ten K-12 schools, including seven elementary schools, two middle schools, and Hackensack High School. There are also several private schools located within Hackensack.

At the higher education level, Hackensack is home to Fairleigh Dickinson University and Bergen Community College. Fairleigh Dickinson University's campus in Hackensack offers over 100 degree programs to more than 7,000 students. Bergen Community College serves nearly 14,000 students annually across its campuses in Hackensack, Paramus, and Lyndhurst.

Sports

Hackensack is home to minor league baseball team the New Jersey Jackals, who play at Yogi Berra Stadium on the campus of Fairleigh Dickinson University. The Jackals are a member of the independent Frontier League.

The 5,000 seat Yogi Berra Stadium hosts the Jackals as well as NCAA Division I games for the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights baseball team. The stadium opened in 1998 and was known as the Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium before being renamed after Yankees legend Yogi Berra in 1999.
