Galloway is a township in Atlantic County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2020 United States Census, the township's population was 34,742. Galloway is located on the Atlantic Ocean southeast of Philadelphia and northwest of Atlantic City.

History

Galloway was originally incorporated as Galloway Township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on April 4, 1774, from portions of Egg Harbor Township and Gloucester County. Portions of the township were taken on December 8, 1852, to form Mullica Township. Additional portions were taken to form Port Republic (April 11, 1856), Bass River Township (March 30, 1864), Woodbine Borough (March 3, 1903) and Port Republic (April 17, 1906).

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township had a total area of 115.934 square miles (300.585 km2), including 102.489 square miles (265.498 km2) of land and 13.445 square miles (34.827 km2) of water (11.6%).

Demographics

Population

The township's population has grown rapidly, from 20,319 residents as of the 2000 United States Census to 37,349 as of the 2020 United States Census, an increase of 84%.

Race and Ethnicity

The racial and ethnic makeup of the township was 78.50% White, 7.80% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 5.50% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 3.60% from other races, and 4.20% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 10.50% of the population.

Households and Families

There were 13,813 households, of which 29.2% had children under the age of 18; 54.2% were married couples living together; 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present and 27.9% were non-families. 20.5% of households were one person and 6.7% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size was 3.08.

In the township, the population age was spread out with 22.5% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 28.0% from 25 to 44, 28.5% from 45 to 64, and 12.5% who were 65 or older. The median age was 39.2 years. For every 100 females, the population had 98.4 males. For every 100 females ages 18 and older there were 96.2 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $65,240, and the median family income was $74,072. About 5.2% of families and 6.6% of the population were below the poverty line.

Government

Galloway Township operates under the Township form of New Jersey municipal government, one of 141 municipalities (of the 565) statewide that use this form, the second-most commonly used form of government in the state. The governing body is comprised of a Mayor and a Township Council, with all positions elected at large on a partisan basis as part of the November general election. A Mayor is elected directly by the voters to a four-year term of office. The Township Council is comprised of four members elected to serve three-year terms on a staggered basis, with one seat coming up for election each year.

The Smithville Historic District

The Smithville Historic District is a historic village and residential enclave located entirely within Galloway Township. It is centered along the main road, Smithville Road, and along the banks of the Absecon Creek. The area contains original and reconstructed buildings from the early settlement of Smithville in the 1770s. It provides an example of a colonial village of artisan and agricultural buildings over two centuries old.

The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey is a public university in Galloway Township. It is one of many schools that make up the New Jersey system of public colleges and universities. The college was founded in 1969 and opened to students in 1971. It was named for Richard Stockton, one of the New Jersey signers of the Declaration of Independence.
