In 1746, a fort was constructed on the New Jersey Palisades by British soldiers to help protect New York City during King George’s War. This encampment was named Fort Constitution. Later, during the American Revolutionary War, General George Washington used the high terrain for reconnaissance activities and a fort was constructed and named Fort Lee in his honor. Fort Lee served as an important military stronghold throughout the war.

After the Revolutionary War, Fort Lee continued to grow as a community. The Burdett's Landing neighborhood became popular in the 19th century as a leisure destination for residents of New York City, reached by ferry. Development accelerated with the opening of the west tower of the George Washington Bridge in 1931, connecting Fort Lee directly to Manhattan.
