History of Ewing

Ewing Township traces its history back to the 17th century when it was still part of Hopewell Township. In 1834, Ewing became its own township under a new name derived from Charles Ewing who was the first Chief Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court. Originally, Ewing was mostly farmland and was considered a rural area.

Growth increased in Ewing during the late 19th and early 20th century with the introduction of trolley lines, the establishment of the Lenape Park racetrack, and the arrival of the John A. Roebling's Sons company (producers of the Brooklyn Bridge cable). Many new homes and developments sprung up during this time period.

Later in the 20th century, Ewing saw additional growth as it became a suburb of nearby Trenton. Government, education, healthcare and more residents continued locating to the township over the decades. However, Ewing still maintains a "small town" character and feel despite its growth.
