The Dutch established the town of Acquackanonk in 1693 which comprised areas that are now known as Passaic, Clifton and Paterson. In the early 1800s, Acquackanonk was an agricultural community called the Dutch Door, named so because the surrounding area contained rich soil that yielded great harvest and wealth.
