History

Cherry Hill was originally formed as Delaware Township from the eastern portions of Gloucester Township and the western portions of Waterford Township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 25, 1844. Portions of the township were taken to form Stockton Township (February 23, 1859) and Merchantville (March 3, 1874). At its territorial peak, Delaware Township included all of modern-day Cherry Hill Township, as well as the neighborhood of North Camden and portions of Collingswood.

The township's population grew rapidly after World War II, and continued to increase until the 1980s. Today, the municipality's population remains stable with new development generally occurring in small pockets of custom luxury homes or through the rehabilitation and adaptive reuse of commercial and industrial areas. Cherry Hill was a 19th-century farm on Kaighn Avenue / Route 38, owned by Abraham Browning. The property later became the Cherry Hill Inn (now a private residence), as well as an office campus, housing developments, and the Cherry Hill Mall.

Cherry Hill was the first "planned" suburb within metropolitan Philadelphia, following earlier, nearby developments like Levittown, Pennsylvania, and Levittown, New York. Unlike its predecessors, Cherry Hill featured more detached, single-family homes and more varied housing styles than the uniform Levittown developments. The original developer of Cherry Hill, Israel & Henry Katz, hired architect Herbert Louis Smith, who had worked with inventor Buckminster Fuller to develop a kit home from modular panels made of plywood and fiberglass. Smith's design featured roof panels that curved up from the slab edge and windows that curved with the same radius. The Katz brothers built the homes in a timber-frame style with prefabricated exteriors that were cheap and fast to build. These homes were offered in early planned developments like New Jersey's Cherry Hill development in 1948.
