History

The earliest residents of the present day Brick Township were the Lenape Native Americans. The Lenapes were a nomadic people who traveled with the seasons from place to place to fish and hunt. They lived in wigwams, houses made of tree branches dressed with animal furs that could easily be packed up and taken along on their travels.

The Sandy Hook Peninsula was bought from the Lenape Native Americans in 1657 by a group of farmers and fishermen from New Amsterdam. They established the first year-round European community on the peninsula. Burr's Dock was a port established at the mouth of the Metedeconk River in the 1600s where timber could be transported for resale in New Amsterdam.

In 1850, Brick Township was incorporated and named after Joseph Brick, owner of the Bergen Iron Works. Brick manufactured the iron for the famous steam engine “The Lion” which was used on the Transcontinental Railroad. Agriculture was the economic engine of the new township. Cranberries were a major crop harvested from the boggy land. Brick was also known for its production of Belle Valley Sweet potatoes.
