Bloomfield is a township in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2020 United States Census, the township's population was 53,101, reflecting an increase of 5,085 (+10.6%) from the 47,315 counted in the 2010 Census, which had in turn increased by 2,566 (+5.7%) from the 44,749 counted in the 2000 Census. It is the home of the commemorative marble statue given to the Bloomfield firefighters from the people of Florence, Italy.

Bloomfield was incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 23, 1812, from portions of Newark Township. The township was named for its blossoming fields.

Population

The 2010 United States Census counted 47,315 people, 17,017 households, and 11,804 families in the township. The population density was 7,888.1 per square mile (3,047.2/km2). There were 17,813 housing units at an average density of 2,977.7 per square mile (1,149.6/km2). The racial makeup was 59.98% (28,366) White, 21.91% (10,368) Black or African American, 0.54% (256) Native American, 7.69% (3,639) Asian, 0.04% (19) Pacific Islander, 6.60% (3,123) from other races, and 3.25% (1,544) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 20.61% (9,755) of the population.

Of the 17,017 households, 32.1% had children under the age of 18; 50.3% were married couples living together; 13.4% had a female householder with no husband present and 31.4% were non-families. Of all households, 25.8% were made up of individuals and 9.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.25.

25.8% of the population were under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 11.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37.2 years. For every 100 females, the population had 92.7 males. For every 100 females ages 18 and older there were 89.4 males.

The Census Bureau's 2006-2010 American Community Survey showed that (in 2010 inflation-adjusted dollars) median household income was $67,985 (with a margin of error of +/- $2,437) and the median family income was $77,677 (+/- $2,506). Males had a median income of $51,681 (+/- $1,953) versus $40,852 (+/- $2,143) for females. The per capita income for the township was $32,321 (+/- $979). About 7.0% of families and 10.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.

History

Bloomfield was originally incorporated as a township from portions of Newark Township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 23, 1812. At the time, Bloomfield was sparsely populated and mostly farmland. The Bloomfield Steam Power Plant operated at the corner of Belleville Avenue and Beach Street from 1888 to 1921.
