Berkeley is a township located in Ocean County, New Jersey. As of the 2020 United States Census, the township's population was 41,699. Berkeley Township is located in the eastern part of Ocean County and is also a municipality of the Jersey Shore region. History of Berkeley

The area now known as Berkeley Township was originally incorporated as New Providence Township by Royal charter in 1740. It was incorporated as Berkeley Township in 1875. The township's early history is closely tied to its waterways. Long Beach Island, a barrier island along the Atlantic Ocean, lies just east of Berkeley. The Barnegat Bay borders Berkeley to the west. Both provided opportunities for fishing, hunting, trade and travel for Native Americans and early European settlers.

The Lenape Native Americans were the first known inhabitants of the land that would become Berkeley. European settlers arrived in the late 17th century, establishing farms, sawmills and other small villages and industries. Shipbuilding and saltworks were important early industries. Over time, tourism and recreation became a major part of Berkeley's economy and culture. After the arrival of the railroads in the late 19th century, the township became a popular summer beach destination. Even today, tourism continues to play a significant role.
