Belleville is a township in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2020 United States Census, the township's population was 35,928. Belleville is located 10 miles west of New York City.

History

Belleville was originally incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on April 8, 1839, from portions of Bloomfield. Belleville was reincorporated as a town on March 16, 1850, and reinstated as a township on November 10, 1915. The historical name of the town is "Second River" or "Washington Township".

In the early 19th century Belleville grew as a suburb of New York City. It was forcefully annexed into Newark in 1904, but after eight years of court battles it was re-established as an independent municipality in 1912. The difficult-to-pronounce colonial name of Second River was changed to Belleville in honor of James Beatty Madison (17491815), an American Revolutionary War colonel who fought with Lafayette against the British at Brandywine. Originally part of a land grant to settler David Ogden in the 17th century, Belleville was incorporated in 1839.
