History

The area that is now Nashua was first settled in the 1600s as part of the town of Dunstable, Massachusetts. In 1836, the northern part of Dunstable was separated and incorporated as Nashua, named after the Nashua River which runs through the area. Nashua thrived as a major textile manufacturing center in the 1800s and attracted many immigrants, especially French-Canadians, to work in the mills. It continued to grow as an industrial city into the 1900s. Today, while some manufacturing remains, Nashua has diversified into a center for healthcare, technology, finance, education, and retail in southern New Hampshire.
