With a population of 112,525 as of the 2020 census, Manchester is the most populous city in New Hampshire and northern New England. Known as the "Queen City", Manchester was founded in 1751 and rose to prominence as a major textile and manufacturing center in the 19th and early 20th century. Today, the city continues to be an economic hub for the region while also attracting visitors with its historic architecture, cultural attractions, and year-round recreation opportunities.

History

The native Pennacook tribe originally inhabited the area along the Merrimack River where Manchester developed. European settlers began arriving in the early 1700s, establishing a permanent community they called Derryfield. By 1751, residents had petitioned the Masonian proprietors in Portsmouth to grant them organization as a parish, which was approved and named Manchester in honor of the English industrial city. The town's strategic location along the Merrimack led to its early prosperity as a trade and transportation center.

The establishment of the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company in 1809 spurred Manchester’s rapid growth as a planned industrial city. The textile mills of “Amoskeag’s New City” attracted thousands of immigrants, mainly French Canadians from Quebec and Irish fleeing the potato famine. By the early 1900s, Manchester was one of the world’s largest textile centers, with over 17 million square feet of mill space. Though the mills have since closed, Manchester retains much of its 19th century downtown architecture and historic neighborhoods developed for the mill workers.
