Derry is a town in Rockingham County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 33,109 at the 2010 census.[1] Derry is situated approximately 34 miles northwest of the state capital of Concord and 6 miles east of the city of Manchester.

History

First settled by Scots-Irish families in 1719, Derry was originally a part of Londonderry, New Hampshire. The town of Derry was officially incorporated in 1827 after being set off from Londonderry.[2] The name Derry was chosen in recognition of the Irish city of Derry that was the hometown of many early Scots-Irish settlers.

Derry was once an agricultural community, but starting in the early 19th century it became a mill town, with many cotton mills powered by the numerous rivers in the area. The downtown area along Broadway evolved into a bustling district of shops, offices and fine houses.[1]

Today, Derry retains much of its historic charm and architecture while also embracing growth and economic development. It is now largely a suburban community and part of the Greater Boston metropolitan area.

Government

Derry has a town council form of government with 9 council members who are elected to staggered 3-year terms. The day-to-day operations are handled by a town administrator appointed by the council.[3]
