Pahrump is a town located in southern Nye County, Nevada, United States. As of 2021, the population of Pahrump was estimated to be over 40,000, making it the largest settlement in the county. Pahrump serves as the county seat of Nye County and is a bedroom community for Las Vegas which is located 60 miles away.

History

The name Pahrump comes from the Southern Paiute word "pah-rimp" which means "water rock." This refers to the artesian wells in the valley that provided water to early settlers. Pahrump was originally inhabited by Native Americans of the Paiute tribe. The first Europeans to enter the Pahrump Valley were a group of Mormon settlers in the late 1840s and 1850s. By the 1880s, small numbers of settlers started farming in Pahrump.[1]

In the 1960s, Pahrump only had a population of about 100 people. However, with the introduction of legalized gambling and a push to establish rural towns near Las Vegas, Pahrump started to grow tremendously in the 1970s and 1980s. Pahrump was incorporated as a town in 1971 and the population exploded from just under 1,000 in 1970 to over 24,000 by 2010.

Geography and Climate

Pahrump is located at 36.208° N, 115.982° W. It sits in the Pahrump Valley between Spring Mountains and the Nopah Range in southern Nevada. The valley is at an elevation of 2,300-2,500 ft above sea level.

Pahrump has a hot desert climate that is generally warm to hot all year round. Summers are very hot with temperatures frequently exceeding 100°F. Winters are mild with daytime highs in the 60s°F and nighttime lows around freezing. Snowfall only occurs a few times per year and does not accumulate due to the dry climate.

Demographics

As of the 2020 census, the population of Pahrump was estimated to be 40,631. This makes it the largest settlement in Nye County and one of the largest towns in Nevada.

The racial makeup of Pahrump is 82.7% White, 1.3% African American, 3.5% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 7.7% from other races, and 3.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race makes up 17.4% of the population.

The median age in Pahrump is 46.8 years old. 22.7% of the population is under 18 years old and 21.5% is aged 65 or older.

There are approximately 16,000 households in Pahrump. 62.4% are family households and 37.6% are non-family households. The average household size is 2.44 people.

Pahrump does not have significant public transportation options within the town limits. There is no bus system or light rail. Many residents rely on personal vehicles to get around. However, some transportation assistance programs are available for certain groups through organizations like the NyE Communities Coalition.[7]

The main highway serving Pahrump is State Route 160 which runs north-south and connects the town to Las Vegas and Barstow, CA. Pahrump does not have any airports within its town limits but McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas provides commercial air service 60 miles away.

Education

Public education in Pahrump is provided by the Nye County School District. There are five elementary schools, two middle schools, two high schools, and an alternative high school in the Pahrump attendance area. Total K-12 enrollment is approximately 6,500 students.

The two main high schools are Pahrump Valley High School[8] and Rosemary Clarke Middle College High School[9] which offer curriculum for grades 9-12. There is also an alternative high school, Oasis Academy, for non-traditional students.

Great Basin College[10] offers two-year degrees and certifications at its Pahrump Valley Center location. There are also several trade schools and career colleges in Pahrump offering programs in healthcare, skilled trades, and technology.
