History

The city of Saint Louis Park first began as a rural area known as "Elm Hill" in the 1860s. The Dakota people were the earliest known inhabitants before French fur traders arrived in the late 17th century. The city was incorporated in 1886 and was named after Louis J. Menage (1843-1921), the first settler to live in the area. Saint Louis Park experienced growth and development in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as railroads expanded and industry flourished. After World War II, the city became a first-ring suburb of Minneapolis with its population rapidly growing. Saint Louis Park has continued to evolve into a diverse, thriving inner-ring suburb.

As of 2019, the racial makeup of Saint Louis Park was approximately 78.1% White, 8.6% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 7.7% Asian, 2.8% from two or more races, and 5.7% Hispanic or Latino. The median age is 37.7 years old.
