Minnesota state outline

Minnesota, nicknamed the "North Star State" and the "Land of 10,000 Lakes", is located in the Midwestern United States. Its name comes from the Dakota word "Mnisota" meaning "sky-tinted water". Minnesota was admitted as the 32nd U.S. state on May 11, 1858. It has a population of over 5.7 million residents. The capital and largest city is St. Paul, while the most populous city is Minneapolis. Other major cities include Duluth, Rochester, and Bloomington.

History of Minnesota

Minnesota has been inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Dakota and Ojibwe for thousands of years. French explorers arrived in the 17th century establishing fur trading posts. The land was acquired by the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Minnesota became a U.S. territory in 1849 and became the 32nd state on May 11, 1858. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, immigrants from Scandinavia, Germany, and Central Europe settled in Minnesota. Logging and farming drove the early economy. Minnesota contributed over 130,000 soldiers to fight in the American Civil War. Major industries today include technology, healthcare, finance, manufacturing, and tourism.

Geography and Climate

Minnesota is the 12th largest U.S. state in area, covering 86,939 square miles. It shares borders with North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Ontario. Minnesota has a varied landscape including prairie grasslands, deciduous forests, and coniferous forests. It has over 11,000 lakes and more shoreline than California, Florida, and Hawaii combined. The state's nickname "Land of 10,000 Lakes" is an underestimate of the actual number. Prominent rivers include the Mississippi, Minnesota, and St. Croix Rivers. The Lake Superior shoreline runs northeast through Duluth. The state's highest point is Eagle Mountain at 2,301 feet above sea level.

Minnesota has a typical continental climate with cold snowy winters and warm humid summers. The state can experience extremes of heat and cold. Average highs in July statewide are around 83°F (28°C) while average lows in January are 1°F (-17°C). Minnesota gets significant snowfall averaging over 40 inches per year in the Twin Cities and over 80 inches in the Arrowhead region.
